Shepherd's Garden is devoted to growing and harvesting fresh vegetables for those in need. The garden not only supplements but also improves the diets of families who subsist on canned goods and dry staples. Our mission is to promote volunteer service, to promote the healthful and educational benefits of gardening, and to promote awareness of hunger in the local community.
WHAT WE DO
Shepherd's Garden is a donation garden. This year we will be growing onions, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, and peppers for donation to local food banks. 100% of our yield is donated to food pantries here in Houston.
Recipients include NAM (Northwest Assistance Ministries), St. Anne's Food Pantry in Tomball, Prince of Peace on Highway 249, and Magnificat House - Loaves and Fishes Program.
We harvested over 4, 000 lbs. of food last year and strive to produce more each year to give to those in need.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
If you would like to volunteer in the Garden, please join us. We have scheduled work hours listed below. However, this is a volunteer opportunity that can fit anyone's schedule. The Garden is open 24/7. Let us know your availability, and we will have tasks for you to do.
SCHEDULED WORK HOURS
Saturday Mornings: 9 - 11 a.m.
Prepare soil, plant seeds, mulch, and weed.
During the peak harvest period of May - July Saturday team members will also harvest.
Monday & Wednesday Evenings: 6 - 7:30 p.m.
This time slot is available during the peak
harvest period of May - July.
Experience Needed: NONE - We will teach you all you need to know. What will you gain from this ministry? You will gain new friends, garden know-how, and satisfaction that comes from doing your part to feed the hungry.
Shepherd's Garden is located directly across the street from Christ the Good Shepherd's parking lot on Klein Church Road. We have 1/3 acre with 28 raised beds measuring 4ft. by 30ft. planted with seasonal vegetables.
OUR HISTORYThe Garden was originally established in 1996 on the property of a CGS parishioner. CGS and its parish members sponsored a "Lenten Project" to fund the Garden's initial start-up costs for equipment and materials. We have been at our current location since 2002.
